To all People of Good Will:

Last Monday, 23 November 2009, the shocking news of a horrifying massacre began circulating through radio, text messages, and word of mouth. Twenty four hours later, there were still no complete and accurate reports on what really happened along the highway between Shariff Aguak and Kauran, Ampatuan, Maguindanao. The number of people massacred continues to rise even now, family-members, friends, legal advocates, journalists, and civilians who found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Bishop hits back at DENR over Mindoro Mining

MANILA, Philippines – Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo hit back at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources over the controversial mining project awarded to a Norwegian firm in Mindoro Island.

In an open letter addressed to DENR Secretary Lito Atienza, Pabillo said they felt “betrayed” by the agency over the 90-day suspension of Intex Resources’ environmental compliance certificate after 25 Mindorenos staged a hunger strike outside the DENR main office in Visayas Avenue, Quezon City.

Church group joins calls to open polls’ ‘source code’

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY—THE (PCPR) in Northern Mindanao has joined the call for the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to make public the source code of the program used in the machines that will be used in the 2010 elections.

PCPR, an organization of priests, ministers and church workers, said until the source code is made public, there is no assurance that there would be honest and impartial automated elections.

Rain fell hard and winds blew strong just before Holy Communion. But the Archdiocese of Cebu’s Eucharistic celebration of the Solemnity of Christ the King, which marks the church’s last Sunday of the liturgical year, proceeded as planned.

During the Mass held at the Cebu City Sports Complex, Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal asked the faithful to aim for peace, truth, and love, which Jesus Christ considered as the foundation of His kingdom.

Catholic Church’s ideal bet: Moral, competent patriot

MANILA, Philippines -- Morality, patriotism and competence are the top qualifications the Catholic Church is looking for in the country’s next leaders as it plunges into the election season early next year, Caloocan Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez said.

“The standards remain the same,” Iniguez said in a telephone interview with the Philippine Daily Inquirer on Sunday afternoon.

Bishop: Casino broke deal with Church

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO—Pampanga Archbishop Paciano Aniceto assailed the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) for reneging on a promise made in 1997 that it would not put up a casino anywhere, except for two sites, in the province.

Aniceto demanded the immediate closure of a casino that Pagcor and the Blue Chip Gaming and Leisure Corp. (Blue Chip) have begun operating at the King’s Royal Hotel and Leisure Park in Bacolor, a town at the boundary of this Pampanga capital, on Oct. 17.

Kapatiran’s JC de los Reyes files CoC for presidency

MANILA, Philippines—The first of a number of “serious” aspirants to the presidency has formally declared his intention to seek the No. 1 post with the blessings of Catholic bishops.

Ang Kapatiran standard-bearer John Carlos “JC” de los Reyes, his running mate Dominador Chipeco Jr., and the party’s seven senatorial candidates filed their certificates of candidacy (CoC) Monday afternoon at the main office of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Intramuros, Manila.
