$2-M ransom demand rejected

Priests not commodities, say Church leaders

Philippine Daily Inquirer, 11/02/2009

MANILA, Philippines—Philippine Catholic Church leaders Sunday rejected a $2-million demand for the release of 79-year-old Fr. Michael Sinnott who was kidnapped three weeks ago in Pagadian City, saying a ransom payment would turn priests into “commodities rather than missionaries.”

Malacañang also turned down the ransom demand of the kidnappers.

'Santi' destroys bridge, knocks out power in Philippines

October 31, 2009, 2:10pm (Manila Bulletin)

MANILA, October 31, 2009 (AFP) - Typhoon Santi (international name "Mirinae") smashed into the Philippines overnight, washing away a bridge, causing power outages, and dumping fresh rain on areas still flooded after recent killer storms, officials said Saturday.
There have been no reports of fatalities but one man is missing after his hut was washed away by floodwaters, said civil defence spokesman Ernesto Torres.
